and here’s why
- Lives and works in London’s well known Gayborhood. The LGBT community has historically been centered around Soho since the 18th century, and Old Compton Street in particular, where bars, clubs, restaurants, cafés, shops and theatres now line the streets.
- learned to gavotte in a discreet gentlemen’s club in Portland Place in the late 1880s
- the only club in that time and place was The Hundred Guineas Club in Portland Place, London which catered for the well off with an annual subscription of 100 guineas (£105). That is £13,534.40 adjusted for inflation. A frankly ridiculous amount of money for any sort of club.
- It was, by far, the most exclusive gay club of the period. It was known for providing a place where upper class gentlemen could take their young soldiers for fun and games, for short term sexual encounters. The customers would assume female names.
- the gavotte itself was known as the kissing dance, because couples concluded improvised duet performances by kissing their partners. Later the dance developed more formal figures, and flowers were exchanged instead of kisses.
- he has an impressive collection of oscar wilde first editions. It is rumored (may be proven, I couldn’t find hard evidence on it) that oscar gave first editions and even drafts to his lovers.
- he was in rome to meet with Nero (from the script) who would later become the first roman emperor to be legally married to another man - three times. (fun fact: crowley was there to have dealings with caligula but the man was already doing a hell of a job spiraling out of control without need for intervention)
- Crowley’s final bit of dialogue, “deep down inside, you were just enough of a bastard to be worth knowing.“ The term “to know” someone, especially in biblical text, was meant as “to have sex with.” While I highly doubt that’s at all what was meant, the change in dialogue from the book (”be worth liking”) is a very interesting choice of words.
- the fact everyone already just assumes he’s gay (much more obvious in the book)
- the fact uriel calls crowley his boyfriend
- his reaction to shadwell’s accusations of saying lewd things to women. (granted, i have a feeling he would react the same no matter what. “Angels can’t be lewd!” I can hear him saying.)
- the fact he calls himself “The southern pansy”
And I’m sure theres like a dozen more things i’m missing so if someone else wants to add on, go right ahead.
